Hello Good Morning! Today we are going to be discussing deep fake videos. These videos can be thought of as the equivalent as edited or Photoshopped pictures. For the past decade or so it is has been a common practice to doubt the legitimacy of an image on the first look. Now this mentality must be applied to videos because editing technology of videos has caught up to or even surpassed that of images. Videos used to be considered PROOF of an event. Now this is just not the case which adds even more to the workload of a conscious consumer of news and media. To be informed in 2020 it really take a lot of effort. It could be argued that at this point it is almost easier to just not pay close attention to current events above a surface level understanding. This is an irresponsible approach but determining what is real and what is not is a hard enough job on its own before even trying to make sense out of news media.
But, I believe that when photo editing software became main stream there were similar sentiments as well. People are in general smart and incredibly adaptable. Deep fakes will be problematic, but I do not believe them to be severely dangerous in the long term.
That being said, a dangerous outcome I can see of deep fakes is to provoke already unstable or dangerous individuals into action. For example, someone losing a grasp on reality and watching deep fake after deep fake of a politician with no care about its legitimacy could be provoked into attacking a politician. This is one way it could get really dangerous really fast with out toxic news environment.
