Yeah you can do File>Save and just save to whatever file format you are working with which is probably .PSD. Most of the time, the default PhotoShop file format is not going to be what you want to work with. A prolific photoshop professional should know the tools he or she has at their disposal in order to get their precious work in the file format they need.
